For instance, the reader learns the fundamental fact about some incidents before the details are shaded in while other important information is withheld until the perfect moment of revelation. The novel is obsessed with time and in more ways than one. That the opening image of the novel focuses on a clock and-more importantly-symbolism related to the passage of time is not mere accident. THIS IS THE STORY OF MY GRANDMOTHER’S CONTINUALLY thwarted attempts to get married. One thing worth considering: does the opening intend to literally suggest that the sperm of the narrator’s father penetrated the egg inside her mother’s womb at precisely midnight? Hmm? The narrator is confronting both the philosophy of Descartes with the announcement that her mere conception rather than birth and subsequent ability to think is indicative of existing as well as Shakespeare with the reference to the Falstaffian line about “chimes at midnight.” That reference is also fraught with layers of meaning. The opening line of the novel is an inventive display of literary technique to offer a little twist on an event which has opened so many novels throughout history that it is has become almost impossible to tell it in any truly original way. I EXIST! I AM CONCEIVED TO THE CHIMES OF MIDNIGHT ON THE clock on the mantelpiece in the room across the hall. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. Melissa Lucashenko’s last novel, Mullumbimby, opened me up to a conversation about feminism, culture and land rights that has stayed with me for years, so I was excited to read her new book. Gritty and darkly hilarious, Too Much Lip offers redemption and forgiveness where none seems possible. And the unexpected arrival on the scene of a good-looking dugai fella intent on loving her up only adds more trouble - but then trouble is Kerry’s middle name. Old family wounds open as the Salters fight to stop the development of their beloved river. She quickly discovers, though, that Bundjalung country has a funny way of grabbing on to people. Kerry plans to spend twenty-four hours, tops, over the border. But now her Pop is dying and she’s an inch away from the lockup, so she heads south on a stolen Harley. Wise-cracking Kerry Salter has spent a lifetime avoiding two things - her hometown and prison. The avalanche of bullshit in the world would drown her if she let it the least she could do was raise her voice in anger. And the older she got, the harder it seemed to get to swallow her opinions. Too much lip, her old problem from way back. Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2019 The change, it was said, came simultaneously with the Innsmouth epidemic of 1846, and was thought by simple folk to have a dark connexion with hidden forces of evil. Once in a while I noticed dead stumps and crumbling foundation-walls above the drifting sand, and recalled the old tradition quoted in one of the histories I had read, that this was once a fertile and thickly settled countryside. Perhaps Lovecraft was still thinking of the Florida he saw outside the bus window when he wrote: In the summer of 1931, Lovecraft traveled down to Florida, as far south as Key West-he had hoped to make it to Cuba to see Havana, but lacking the funds for the passage, made his way back up the East Coast by bus, taking with him the memories which inspired Devil’s Reef, when he came to write “The Shadow over Innsmouth” in the winter of that year. Lovecraft to August Derleth,, Essential Solitude1.349 If I use the tropic setting for any kind of tale, it will be one involving brooding mysterious on one of those low coral keys which lie in spectral desertion just off the shore. I also took a trip over neighbouring coral reef in a glass-bottomed boat which gave splendid view of the exotic tropical flora & fauna of the ocean floor-grasses, sponges, corals, fishes, sea-urchins, crinoids, etc. Struggling with doubt, Ren finds it hard to forgive. And when yet another tragedy occurs, things will never be the same.Ĭaught between who she is and who she is supposed to be, Ren faces a harsh heartbreaking reality. She soon realizes, no matter how hard she tries to live up to everyone's expectations for her, she falls short. Focusing on the only relationship that should matter, when Emerson crosses a line in their friendship, she has no choice but to let him go.Ĭonfused by Emerson's actions and desperately trying to keep up appearances, she confides in Jackson.
